Eight Things That
Prayer Does By Pastor Pete Norris Every time you pray, there is a plowing process going on. Hosea 10:12 declares "Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you." Prayer plows the ground of your heart, and as you pray, God can sow His Word in your heart because of prayer. Prayer can accomplish great things in your life. Here are some of the results of prayer which I have discovered: 1) Prayer Brings A Revelation of Self True prayer (not repetitious) will show you who you are. When you pray with truth, the first revelation God will give you is one of yourself. You will see your nothingness, your emptiness, your total dependence upon Him. He will reveal how weak and sinful you are. This revelation of self produces brokeness. The Word of God says in Psalm 51:17: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. When you see who you are, you begin to say, "Who am I to serve you? Who am I to speak your holy name from these lips?" Like Isaiah the prophet, you will say, "Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." (Isaiah 6:5) At that moment, God will reveal His presence to you. 2) Prayer Brings Cleansing and Forgiveness Prayer brings power that will cleanse your heart from sin. In Psalm 19:12-13, 12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression., we find David’s prayer as he petitioned God to deliver him from secret faults and cleanse him from secret sins. 3) Prayer Keeps You Walking With God D.L. Moody said, "He who kneels most stands best." The praying Christian is strong and unmoved by the things around him. Prayer has power to hold you up and keep you walking with God. Psalm 17:5: Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not. 4) Prayer Helps You Govern Your Tongue Prayer has the power to govern your tongue and keep you from saying the wrong things. Psalm 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Prayer is the highest, most effective form of communication, and one of the greatest privileges afforded to man. 5) Prayer Brings Spiritual Understanding Prayer has power to open your eyes to see wondrous things from God’s Word. The person who prays is the one who understands the Word of God. Psalm 119:18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. D.L. Moody said "A Christian on his knees will see more than a philosopher on his tip toes." Prayer enables you and me to seek God, and the Word reveals Him. 6) Prayer Has Power To Give Wisdom Prayer has power to give wisdom. James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Wisdom is the application of knowledge. Prayer helps you understand the Word and enables you to apply it. Never make a decision without spending time in prayer. 7) Prayer Has Power To The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit comes because of prayer. Prayer and only prayer has power to bring the Holy Ghost upon your life in all of His glory. Acts 2:4 declares: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 8) Prayer Has Power To Bring Salvation Prayer has power to bring salvation to others. In I John 5:16, If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it., we can go to God in prayer on behalf of someone else. In answer to our prayers, God will give eternal life to the one from whom we have prayed. Do not ever stop praying for you unsaved loved ones! God answers prayer, for James 5:16 says "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." God’s Word promises in Matthew 21:22, And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Beginning today, pray in faith, believing that prayers will be answered. Pray with unquestioning confidence that God has heard your request. Your answer is on the way. |
