Abortion And Psalm 139
By Pastor Anita Norris

The Bible clearly reveals the plan of God in creation as well as His plan in redemption. When we rebel against His will by destroying His creation or rejecting His gospel, we invite God’s judgment upon ourselves and upon our society. Psalm 139 and related passages teach that the developing child is the expression of God’s greatest creation, humankind. Abortion risks God’s absolute and final judgment on our nation.

Psalm 139:15-16 -- “My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.”

A human being exists when God creates him, not at some later point when he has grown to look like a newborn or has taken his first breath of air. God creates human beings at conception (Psalm 51:5; Job 3:3; Matthew 1:18-20). At their earliest point of development, not yet recognizable as humans in their “unformed substance,” these tiniest, embryonic individuals are the subjects of God’s superintending love and concern as persons. David thus recognized that with respect to his pre-natal development: “I was made in secret” (see cross-references - Job 31:15; Romans 119:73; Ecclesiastes 11:5). Our personal identity is continuous not only from birth, but even from conception. Before our mothers knew they were pregnant, God knew, and He cared for the developing human lives within them. Thus, God deals sovereignty and personally with us human beings not only after our birth but prior to birth as well. (Luke 1:15, 41, 44; Romans 9:10-13). From an even broader perspective, God has known us and cared for us from all eternity (Jeremiah 1:5; Ephesians 1:4).

Just as Adam was created in God’s image, so too is every baby conceived in his/her mother’s womb. This is demonstrated in Psalm 139. Like Adam who was “created out of the dust of the earth” (Genesis 2:7), we also are “wrought in the depths of the earth.”

Being created in the image of God distinguishes humankind from the rest of creation. In other words, we have been created in order to know God and to resemble Him as our Father - in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). To this end, we have been created with appropriate rational, moral, and spiritual faculties. Therefore, each of us possesses an absolute worth which can neither be earned nor forfeited.

As the Son of God, Jesus was sent to secure the redemption of men and woman. To this end He Himself, without surrendering His deity, became fully man, participating in the full range of human development and growth. Jesus’ participation in humanity began where every human life begins - at conception (Matthew 1:18-20; Luke 1:31). This truth is crucial, for it tells us that in God’s sight human life at every stage of development, from conception onward, is the object of His redeeming love. The entirety of Psalm 139 bears eloquent witness to this truth. Men and women have no authority to flagrantly destroy human beings at any point in their development.

Wayne Pregnancy Care Center exists to protect men, women, and children from the devastation of abortion. It needs your help to open its doors to provide practical alternatives to women and their families in crisis pregnancies.
