the Accuser of the Brethren By Pastor Pete Norris |
|
The word "accuser" in the Greek is translated "diabolos" meaning "against in the assembly or to charge with some offenses." The word accuser is in the Bible 34 times as Satan or devil and one time as Judas. John 6:70-71 - "Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon; for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve." Men are never spoken of as a devil, but demons. This is found three times in the New Testament (I Timothy 3:11, II Timothy 3:3, Titus 2:3). Our goal is to see the living church delivered from the strong- holds of fault-finding and to have our hearts turned instead to prayer. When someone should discover the imperfections of the pastor or church, that is by no means a sign of spirituality. We could find fault with the pastor and the church before we were Christians. What we do with what we see, however, is the measure of Christ-like maturity. When Jesus saw the condition of mankind, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a bondservant. Philippians 2:7-8 - "But made himself 0/ no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." When we focus on people's imperfections, if we are not willing to help them overcome them, then we are not walking in Godly love. The Bible says that if the brother or sister falls in fault, we should restore them with the spirit of meekness. The Amplified Bible says to restore them with gentlenes. Galatians 6:1- "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself; thou also be tempted. " Always listen out the person that you are critical of. John 7:51 - "Doth our law judge any many, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?" Have you truly listened out the brother you are critical of or are you an accuser of the brethren? These spiritual attacks come upon congregations or individual people prior to or immediately after a significant breakthrough. The church needs correction, but the ministry of reproof must be patterned after Christ and not the accuser of the brethren. Jesus corrected two of seven churches in Asia Mi- nor.
He sandwiched His rebuke between praise and promises. He reassured the churches
that the voice
inspired virtue. After encouraging them, He brought correction. (Revelation
Chapters 2 & 3) He even gave Jezebel time to repent. Revelation
2:20-21 - "Notwithstanding I have a things against thee, because
thou sufferest woman
Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess,
to teach and to seduce my servants to
commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. And I gave her
space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not."
Even
in serious correction, the voice of Jesus is always the embodiment of grace and
truth. John 1: 14 - "And the Word was made flesh, and
dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of
the Father,) full of grace and truth." If the word of rebuke or
correction does not offer grace for restoration, it is not the voice of the
shepherd. John 10:4-5 - "And when he putteth forth his
own sheep, he goeth before them and the sheep follow him; for they know his
voice; and a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him; for they
know not the voice of strangers." Jesus is not condemning us, but
inter- ceding on our behalf. Romans 8:33-34 (Amplified) - "Who shall bring any charge
against God's elect (when it is) God who justifies (that is, who puts us in
right relation to Himseljf. Who shall come forward and accuse or impeach those
whom God has chosen? Will God, who ac- quits (us)? Who is there to condemn (us)?
Will Christ Jesus who died, or rather who was raised from the dead, who is at
the right hand of God actually pleading as He intercedes for us." We
need to pray for one another instead of preying on one another. If we are not willing to die for them, we have no right to judge them. Criticism must be replaced with prayer, fault-finding replaced with a covering love. I Peter 4:8 - ,. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves; for charity 01 love shall cover the multitude of sins." We need to walk in unconditional love. Questions or Comments regarding this site??
